(AGAINST) Body Donation Poster; 1st Draft.

This is the first draft of my Typographic poster against donating your body to science. The theory behind this poster is to question if you would be comfortable knowing what could happen to you or a family members body after it is donated in the name of science.

Paige In Full Critique

I thought that the Paige in Full performance was really nice. I did not expect it to be as good as it was. At the beginning I did not know if I was going to be as drawn into the performance but I was. The way the show was set up, was like a black box theater performance. I felt it was very interesting how this performance incorporated video slide show, DJ, sound effects, and music. This was all combined with the excellent performance of Paige Hernandez who was the star of the show. She seemed like a very charismatic passionate person. Also her brother Nick Hernandez accompanied her and he was the DJ for the show. The main objective of this show was for Paige to express and tell her life story threw the art of Hip hop. She did this with music, dancing, spoken word, and rapping. The show also consisted of some audience interaction were at one point she tested the audience on their Hip hop knowledge.
The show started off with her telling about her growing up as a kid in Baltimore. She said it was not easy especially because she was different from most of the girls she went to school with. She explained that she is Black, Chinese, and Cuban, and how she did not fit in with the other kids. She explained a little about her heritage and how this made her unique. Baltimore life for her was not easy because she had to deal with fitting in and being looked at as being different for the way she acted and the way she looked. She talked about how Hip-hop was an outlet for her. One of the shows she grew up on was Living Color and she could remember looking up to the Fly Girls that were on the show and pretending that she was one.  She looked up to many Hip hop artists for inspiration such as Tupac who went to the same school as her. They both attended Baltimore School for the Arts. At the mid point of the show the vibe went from up beat and comical to kind of serious and somber when she talked about the day she lost her grandmother.
Going into the second part the vibe kind of stayed the same as she talked about growing up and meeting this man who she described as hardcore. She talked about how she felt the need to be tougher and how this guy was what she looked to give her that edge. In a very elegant way she talked about the bad things they did together and how he was leading her down the wrong path. Then one day he physically abused her and she saw that the relationship was going no were. To him she was just an accessory. The somber tone lifted as she fast forwarded to later on and she met a new guy who lifted her spirits and made her believe in herself.

An Evening with Nikki Giovanni

The event (An Evening with Nikki Giovanni) was very insightful. I really enjoyed listing to Mrs. Giovanni as she reflected on the past and spoke about her views and opinions of our world today. I found her to be very funny, relatable and down to earth. When she first started speaking that night she spoke about where we are at today and she commented on the fact that really the only black woman that go notable recognition after she died was Lena Horn. She said there are many black women that have achieved so much in there lifetime that also deserved recognition. This lead her to talk to the audience about her family and a woman she knew and she read a poem out of her book called 100 Best African American Poems called The Aunt (by: Mary Agnus). She stated that the hip-hop generation is taking over and how now days you can find Hip hop almost everywhere you look. Nikki Giovanni even said that one of her favorite rappers was Tupac and how he was such a poet. Another topic she touched on was the fact that we need to get back control of our bodies and mind and how now days there are way to many black men being locked up and all of their rights are being taken from them and she compared them to slaves. She spoke on the fact that one of your most important rights is to vote and how we are responsible for putting these people in office. Mrs. Giovanni said that she loves to watch TV and it was funny when she ran threw some TV history and stated shows she considered stupid. This all lead to a statement she made about how accidental learning is very important. This basically meant that a lot of things you know and make you who you are were not necessarily things you were intentionally trying to learn. She said you can learn things you never thought you would learn by just noticing you surroundings and taking in new things from everyday life. It was interesting when she told us that she knew Rosa Parks and she told us that she was a funny beautiful woman and how her actions were a result of destiny. She also spoke on Emmett Till and how as a result of events surrounding what happened to him it sparked a chain of change. Finally Nikki Giovanni closed on how she believed Facebook was a political network instead of a social network. Then the evening closed with some questions from the audience.

Project #1 Typographic Self Portrait

My objective for this project was to replicate a picture of myself only using ONLY text. With this project I knew I wanted to include variety and repetition. Before starting this project I had to think of words that represented who i was and some how incorporate those words into my project.

What I did to complete this project was Adobe Illustrator. I took a picture of myself and I used the live trace tool to simplify my photo so it would make it easier to create my picture. From there I used a combination of clipping masks, and type on a path to complete my project. I was surprised at how the picture turned out. I feel like I accomplished my goal of using repetition and variety.
